Overview and purpose

Teaching Civic Education for Active Citizenship is a 6-day intensive workshop designed to support educators who want to build informed, engaged, and responsible citizens. As part of erasmus+ staff training, this course equips teachers with practical tools, structured methodologies, and the confidence needed to teach civic education effectively in today’s complex social landscape.

Day 1: Foundations of Civic Education

  • Morning: Definition, scope, and importance of civic education in fostering active citizens. Understanding the role of civic education in democratic participation, social responsibility, and community engagement.
  • Afternoon: Case studies exploring the impact of civic education on democracy and social responsibility. Reflection on current societal challenges and the educator’s role in shaping informed and responsible citizens.

Day 2: Curriculum Design and Active Learning

  • Morning: Mapping learning objectives and developing a comprehensive civic education curriculum aligned with student needs and educational contexts. Structuring lessons that promote knowledge, skills, and civic values.
  • Afternoon: Hands-on activities to incorporate role-playing, simulations, project-based learning, and digital tools to make civic education interactive, engaging, and impactful.

Day 3: Engaging Students in Civic Discourse and Action

  • Morning: Strategies for encouraging student participation in local and global community issues. Promoting civic engagement through service learning, school initiatives, and active citizenship projects.
  • Afternoon: Teaching respectful debate, critical thinking, and analyzing diverse perspectives. Building classroom environments that support dialogue, inclusion, and constructive disagreement.

Day 4: Media Literacy and Ethical Citizenship

  • Morning: Teaching students to evaluate news sources, recognize misinformation, and engage critically with digital and traditional media. Strengthening media literacy as a foundation for responsible citizenship.
  • Afternoon: Discussing social justice, human rights, democratic values, and ethical responsibilities as citizens. Exploring how educators can foster empathy, fairness, and social awareness.

Day 5: Assessment and Evaluation in Civic Education

  • Morning: Designing authentic assessment methods to evaluate civic knowledge, participation, attitudes, and critical thinking skills. Using reflective journals, debates, portfolios, and community projects as evaluation tools.
  • Afternoon: Developing feedback strategies that support student growth in civic responsibility and democratic engagement. Sharing best practices for measuring long-term civic learning outcomes.

Day 6: Guided Cultural Tour of Rome and Reflection

  • Morning: Explore historic landmarks such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Vatican City.
  • Afternoon: Reflective discussions, certificate ceremony, and closing remarks.
